Battling Diabetes With Beta Cells

Affecting eighter percent of America's population, diabetes can buoy lead to blindness, kidney failure, strokes and warmness disease. Thanks to Tel Aviv University researchers, a new cure - based on advances in cell therapy - may be within reach.



Prof. Shimon Efrat from TAU's Sackler Faculty of Medicine, whose research group is among world leaders in beta cell expansion, has developed a way to cultivate cells derived from insulin-producing genus Beta cells from human tissue in the laboratory. It may be possible to implant these new healthy cells into patients with type 1 diabetes.



If successful, this method, which by artificial means replicates the insulin cells people motivation, could check that fewer people testament die patch waiting for a lifesaving pancreas and kidney. Prof. Efrat's research paves the way for new and alternative forms of handling in cases in which organ transplantation is non an option. In contrast to previous research, which failed to manifold mouse beta cells in culture, Prof. Efrat's form has increased the number of human beta cells successfully. THE O.C. star RACHEL BILSON has laughed off claims she's returning to California's Orange County for a movie version of the hit TV show.

Lionel Richie says Commodores will reunite soon for tour

ST JOHN'S, Antigua - Grammy award-winning pop singer Lionel Richie said Saturday he and the Commodores will reunite soon for a tour.

Richie said a reunion could happen in the next two years because it is important the group get together before it loses more band members. Guitarist Milan Williams died two years ago.

"We better do it now, or in the next 10 years nobody would care," he said before singing at Antigua's Romantic Rhythms festival.

The Commodores were known for hits like "Three Times a Lady" and "Brick House."

The 58-year-old Ritchie was confident synergy still exists between band members. He said Commodores' bass player Ronald La Pread joined him on stage during his last tour and played some of the group's old hits.

Richie broke away from the Commodores in the late 1970s and topped the charts in the '80s with songs like "Endless Love" and "Say You, Say Me."
